An estimated 2,500 men, women, and children were declared dead by 2004 as a result of crossing the border from Mexico to the United States. To honor these deceased migrants, contemporary artist Alejandro Santiago created 2,501 life size ceramic sculptures.
The image above portrays the first of the 2,501 sculptures, Alejandro’s prototype. He referred to it as the mother of the migrants.
