Alfredo Castañeda biography

Alfredo Castañeda (1938 - 2010) was born in Mexico City.

Casteñeda did not study fine art in university, but instead studied architecture at the University of Mexico, where he received a degree in the subject in 1964. During this time he began drawing and painting as a hobby, which he began to take more seriously as the years progressed.

He is known for his surrealist paintings, often depicting portraits of men with subdued colors. His work has been showcased internationally in the US and many Latin American countries including Mexico. His work is collected across the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Castañeda’s first solo show was with the prestigious Galería de Arte Mexicano (GAM) in 1969, shortly after graduating university. There was also a retrospective for the artist at Monterrey Museum in 1990 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Castañeda died at age 72 in Madrid, in 2010.
