Further Information

"Tehuantepec River" by Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias presents a romanticized view of Mexico's indigenous life. It features a woman carrying a basket on her head, set against a backdrop of a river and hills. Covarrubias researched the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where the Tehuana people lived, contributing to the region's cultural understanding.

Enamored by indigenous populations, Covarrubias was a prolific illustrator and embraced cultural history. Another work from the same edition was recently displayed in the Chrysler Museum's exhibit "Journeys Across the Border: U.S./Mexico," highlighting 20th-century artists' cross-border collaboration in 2017, among other museums and are institutions.
