The Forgotten Female Artists of the Surrealist Movement

The Forgotten Female Artists of the Surrealist Movement

Until the 24th of May, 2020 - the SCHIRN Kunthalle Frankfurt, in Frankfurt, Germany will be holding a major exhibition for female surrealists.

The exhibition will incorporate 260 works by 34 female artists including works by: Leonora Carrington, Meret Oppenhiemer, Dorothea Tanning, and Frida Kahlo.

In addition to these household names, the exhibition will include works by lesser known artists such as: Bridget Tichnor, Alice Rahon, Kay Sage, and Ithell Colquhoun.

Although female artists played a major role in the shaping of the Surrealist Movement, they have often been neglected by the history books and given little credit for their influence; this is the fundamental message and purpose of the exhibition.

"On the whole, the [Surrealist] movement in many ways strikes as decidedly 'feminine', since it rejected all traditionally masculine, patriarchal, and imperialist structures.." writes Ingrid Pfeiffer (exhibition curator).

The exhibition will include a diverse body of works from film and sculpture to photography and works on paper.

location: SCHIRN Kunthalle Frankfurt (Frankfurt, Germany)
dates: 13 February 2020 - 24 May 2020
curator: Ingrid Pfeiffer
